The true story of a 17-year-old British woman who married a Venezuelan and went to live in a remote area of the Andes. Although her marriage breaks down, she forms a strong bond with the local people.

This novel tells the story of an 18th-century woman who enters a court battle with her late husband's child for his lands. After her death, her ghost continues telling the story. This book won the 1998 Pegasus Prize for Literature.
