This source offers comprehensive sociological and anthropological analyses of all the cultural groups present in South Africa. It is an excellent source for those interested in the historical development of a particular group in South Africa.

West, Martin. Abantu: An Introduction to the Black People of South Africa, Cape Town and Johannesburg, C. Struik Publishers, 1976.
This illustrated volume explores the traditions and lifestyles of the South African tribes. It has colour and black and white photographs depicting all aspects of tribal life and customs, The text is easy to follow and informative. The last chapter describes how traditional tribal life has changed in South Africa. Some information in the last chapter might no longer apply, since this material was researched and written in the mid-1970s.

Mandala, Nelson. Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandala, Boston, Littlebrown, 1994.
This autobiographical work looks at the life and struggles of Nelson Mandala, the current President of South Africa. It is a good way to learn more about the recent political history of South Africa while understanding how people of all races have rallied around Mandala in the hope of a united and integrated South Africa.
