MALAYSIA TO CANADA
Every year, thousands of people from all over the world come to Canada to start a new life. They come with many different skills and the hope of contributing to their new society.

 If you are reading this website you may be interested in finding out more about Malaysians, where they come from and what it is like in their home country. Perhaps you are hosting a Malaysian family as part of the HOST Program, learning about Malaysian newcomers in school or working with Malaysians who have settled in Canada recently. Whatever the reason, you will probably find this website helpful. It will introduce you to Malaysia and give you some information about its society and culture.
It is important to remember that the move to a new country and culture can be difficult. All immigrants leave behind family and friends. They will have many questions when they come to Canada. You can help them adjust to Canada and can answer many of their practical questions about schools, hospitals, or shopping. You will probably find that you have some things in common with your Malaysian friends.

 Malaysians come from a multiracial country. Although this cultural profile provides insight into some customs, it does not cover all facets of life. The customs described may not apply in equal measure to all newcomers from Malaysia.

Of the many thousand species of insects found in Malaysia, one of the most interesting is the firefly. Along the Selangor River near Kuala Lumpur, thousands of fireflies flash at the same time, on and off like Christmas lights. Scientists cannot explain this phenomenon. Villagers used to put fireflies in bottles to serve as lamps.
